Sugar Pie’s ~ The Third Great Teaching ~ TRUST
One time we went to a beach. It was a long way from home and the drive was great! Freeways were my favorite places to ride. I always loved to watch all the cars going by. There was so much to see. And there were so many cars and trucks! Sometimes people riding in other cars waved at me and made a big fuss about this gorgeously cool cat (me) in the next car over (ours). When we got to the beach, Mom took me out on the leash and we walked out for a ways, but the sand felt so weird on my paws and the smells were so strange, and there was just... well I can’t even begin to tell you about all that water. There was more water than land or sand. I’ve never seen so much water in one place. There was no end to it. It moved toward us in these big huge noisy waves. I’d never seen anything like it in my life. The creek back in Arkansas was wild water enough for me. But at this beach, I got so scared I jumped up on Mom’s shoulder. She understood that I didn’t want to be in that place so she hugged me close and took me back to the car — no flack, no critical vibes. See? We knew how to “talk” to each other, and I could always count on her to understand and take care of my needs and even my wants. As you probably have guessed by now, this lesson is about trust. I could always trust my Mom. She always protected me and yet she still let me try things out. I could always go back to her if something didn’t pan out and she would make me feel safe and comfortable. I could try most anything because she always let me investigate new things. If she wasn’t sure something was safe, she stayed close by and let me know if I shouldn’t go any closer, and I understood her meaning. I was safe when my Mom was around. She never cramped my style and I trusted her completely. I don’t know if you realize it or not, Sugar Pie, but you jumped all the way from the deck at the Arkansas farm to a beach in California. I know you don’t usually like to have to deal with unimportant things like organization, but by now I’m sure everyone is buzzing to know about your getting from one place to the other, and some of the things that happened along the way. Do you think you could work that in to your next Great Teaching? Sure, Mom. No problemo.
